Publication awareness camp for co-op societies

The Communication Centre, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, organised a publication awareness camp for cooperative societies of Patiala in view of the oncoming Rabi season. Dr KK Gill, senior agrometeorologist, while discussing about weather advisories generated by the PAU, highlighted the university’s weekly digital newspaper, ‘Kheti Sandesh’, and its wide circulation among farmers of the state. Dr Sandeep Singh, agronomist, dwelled on wheat cultivation practices, new and water conserving wheat varieties recommended by the PAU and the need to break the wheat-rice cropping pattern to save water as well as the environment. He urged the cooperative societies to go in for soil testing and promoting kitchen gardens at the farmers’ level. Dr Yuvraj Pandhi, entomologist, threw light on diseases in wheat crop as well as insect pest management. Gulneet Chahal, assistant director, publication, and coordinator of the camp, motivated secretaries of the cooperative societies to increase their connection with the university in the interest of the farming community, by enrolling as members of publications, ‘Changi Kheti’ and ‘Progressive Farming’. She further exhorted them to sensitise farmers to PAU-recommended farming techniques for sustainable agriculture.
