Led by the Youth Akali Dal (YAD), gym owners held a protest at Shivpuri Chowk demanding immediate reopening of gyms.
YAD district president Gurdeep Singh Gosha said the state government had allowed reopening of shopping malls, hotels, restaurants and places of worship, but gym owners and health club operators were being denied permission to reopen which was discriminatory and vindictive.
He said as the schools were demanding tuition fee, electricity bills were being raised and taxes had to be paid after more than two months of lockdown. In present situation, gym owners and health club operators were forced to sell their medals and other assets to run their households.
The YAD president said for the past 80 days, gyms and health clubs were closed. After the government had relaxed the restrictions and allowed opening of the industry, shops, other business establishments and even liquor vends, the closure of gyms and health clubs had absolutely no justification, he added.
“Gym owners cannot afford to pay rents, salaries and other expenses of their establishments. Even the children of financially-stressed gym owners have joined the protest to urge the government to come to their rescue and allow reopening so that they could feed their families and incur other expenditure, along with paying government taxes, school fee and electricity bills,” said Gosha.
He said the government should announce a special package for gyms and health clubs and also allow the gyms to reopen, of course with conditions of maintaining safety and observing other necessary precautions.
Ishan Pruthi, Sunny Sachdeva, Kunal Agnihotri, Himank, Sharan Singh, Vippon, Sukhi Singh, Sajan, Pankaj Chaudhary, Amarjeet Singh, Ashu Chawla, Vijay Behal and Lucky Mehani were also present at the occasion.
