Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has appointed a committee comprising SP MLAs and MLCs to probe “fake” cases against its Rampur MP Azam Khan.

Samajwadi Party chief spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said the 22-member committee led by Ahmad Hasan, leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Parishad, would reach Rampur on July 20 to probe the cases of encroachment of farmers’ land recently lodged against the Rampur MP. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three days.

According to the complaint, Khan in his capacity as the Chancellor of the Rampur-based Mohammad Ali Jauhar University had forcibly taken over their land.

The Rampur district administration has lodged around two dozen cases against the former cabinet minister. The Yogi government is now contemplating listing him as a land mafia on the state government’s “Anti-Bhoo Mafia”(anti-land mafia) portal.

Meanwhile, the National Green Tribunal has formed a committee to probe allegations of illegal construction on the floodplain of Kosi river in Rampur by the Jauhar University.
