New Delhi, April 19

The government today notified the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022, after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the law, giving some clarity on how the new wards will be redrawn before the elections.

The President also gave his assent to the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill. Both the Bills were passed by Parliament during the Budget session. With the MC Bill, the Delhi’s East, South and North Delhi Municipal Corporations have been merged into one and will now be called the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The government will now soon appoint a Special Officer, who will discharge the functions of the corporation till the elections take place.

Delhi at present has 272 wards. Under the unified MCD, the city will have maximum 250 wards. —
