New Delhi, June 1

In view of uncertain conditions due to Covid, feedback received from stakeholders and apprehensions voiced by parents and students, the Centre today cancelled the Class XII exams.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi. The CBSE and Education Ministry officials gave a detailed presentation on views received from all stakeholders, including states.

“Health and safety of our students is of utmost importance. Covid has affected the academic calendar and the issue of exams has been causing immense anxiety among students and parents, which must be put to an end,” the PM said.

The CISCE, which does not come under the Education Ministry, also reportedly cancelled the Class XII exams.

Modi directed officials to ensure that results were prepared in accordance with “well-defined objective criteria in a fair and time-bound manner”. It was also decided that like last year, in case some students want to take the exams, the option will be provided to them as and when the situation becomes conducive.

The meeting was attended by Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, Prakash Javadekar, Smriti Irani, and Piyush Goyal. Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal could not attend as he is admitted to AIIMS because of “post-Covid complications”.
