Moong, one of the main pulses grown during the kharif season, is fetching over minimum support price (MSP) at Jagraon in Ludhiana.

Against the MSP of Rs 7,275 per quintal, moong is being sold for up to Rs 7,475 per quintal at the Jagraon grain market as the state government is procuring the produce for the first time.

As Jagraon grain market is the main mandi for moong arrival, Ludhiana district is leading the state with 75 per cent of the total purchase till Monday. Of the total 2,954.91 metric tonne (MT) of moong purchase across the state, Jagraon has logged 2,214 MT procurement.

Markfed Managing Director Ramvir told The Tribune that of the total 3,420.06 MT moong procurement in the state so far, 495.75 MT was purchased by Markfed, which was the nodal agency for moong procurement, while 2,459.16 MT was procured by private agencies. With this, 887 farmers from almost 100 villages have so far been benefitted by selling moong in the state.

With the government procuring moong, its price has picked up, which was evident from the fact that several farmers have fetched more than MSP for their moong at Jagraon mandi on Monday.

Gursev Singh from Mannabarpura Tihara village, Parwinder Singh of Tarewala village, and Gurmail Singh from Kothe Pona village sold their over 4,000 quintal moong at Rs 7,475 per quintal, which was Rs 200 per quintal more than the MSP. With 201.45 MT arrival on Monday, 3,420.06 MT moong arrived at the state mandis, of which 495.75 MT was purchased by Markfed and 2,459.16 MT by private agencies.
