The overenthusiasm shown by almost all political parties while campaigning for the Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll failed to enthuse voters. This was evident from the low turnout of 36.4 per cent (till 5 pm) on Thursday, against 72.44 per cent in 2019.

During the Assembly elections early this year, all nine segments of Sangrur witnessed more than 70 per cent polling, with Lehra registering the highest 79.60 per cent.

Opposition parties alleged distrust of voters in the AAP government had led to the drastic fall in polling. The low turnout led CM Bhagwant Mann to request the EC to allow polling till 7 pm due to the ongoing paddy season.

Almost all top leaders of AAP, Congress, BJP, SAD and SAD (A) had campaigned in the constituency. While the Opposition parties targeted AAP over law and order, the latter claimed it took major decisions for the welfare of the state in a short span.

SAD leader Winnerjit Singh Goldy claimed, "Voters lost interest in the bypoll due to the failure of the AAP government on all fronts. The party will lose the seat."

Accusing the Opposition parties of raising frivolous issues, AAP candidate Gurmail Singh claimed pro-people initiatives taken by the government would work in his favour.
