LED streetlights installed in the Bagguana area around a year ago are yet to get a power connection. Pipes purchased for laying sewers, too, are rotting. Repeated requests of residents to the authorities to look into these projects have fallen on deaf ears.

Sources said in December 2016, the then authorities had stored pipes for sewage lines at the local gurdwara and around a year ago, LED streetlights were also installed in the area.

“Now, both the LED lights and the pipes are rotting. The local sewage board authorities are adopting double standard as the LED streetlights installed in other areas of the city were made functional immediately after their installation, but in our area, the authorities are not giving electricity connection for the installed LED lights. The state government must look into the matter,” said Vikramdeep Sidhu, president of a nongovernment organisation, Youth Power Group.

Some residents alleged that even after the change of government in the state, they were yet to see any development in their area.

“We have been meeting the authorities of sewage board repeatedly to make these lights functional and for getting the sewage lines laid, but there has been no action yet,” said Piara Singh, a resident of Bagguana.

State PWD Minister Vijay Inder Singla, MLA from Sangrur, on Thursday during his visit to Sangrur, said he would look into the matter and take effective steps to accelerate the process.

“First we will lay sewage lines, then water supply lines, then make the lights functional. But laying of sewage lines was delayed due to delay in the finalisation of land to construct Sewage treatment plant (STP). But some days back, we finalised the land for the STP on the Hareri road. Baguana residents will get all facilities soon,” said Tejinder Kumar, Junior Engineer of sewage board.
