The state government has allocated Rs28.5 crore for those who suffered losses during the floods in the district. Five months ago, the region witnessed floods. The affected farmers have been waiting for compensation from the government since then.
On Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma asked the SDMs of Phillaur and Shahkot to immediately start the process of disbursing the compensation.
The plight of farmers, whose paddy fields were submerged in flood water, was highlighted in these columns. After suffering losses, farmers sowed wheat, but their wait for the compensation continued.
Talking to The Tribune in the past, Shahkot SDM Sanjeev Sharma had said 6,700 affected farmers were identified in the Lohian tehsil and they would get the compensation shortly.
The DC said of the total amount, Rs21.90 crore would be kept for crop loss in Shahkot subdivision, Rs2.76 crore for Nakodar subdivision and Rs2.19 crore for Phillaur subdivision.
The state government has allocated Rs1.37 crore for house damage, Rs30.33 lakh for cattle loss and Rs4 lakh for the families of those who died during the floods.
The DC said this was relief for residents of the flood-affected areas and the amount must be disbursed to them. The SDMs of Shahkot, Nakodar and Phillaur subdivisions have been asked to ensure that the compensation is distributed at the earliest.
Sharma said he would personally monitor the disbursement of compensation to the affected people in a time-bound manner. “The compensation will be disbursed as per the assessment done by Revenue officials. The amount will be transferred in the account of the flood-affected farmers. No laxity will be tolerated in paying the amount,” said the DC.
