Harbhajan Singh Dang, Leader of Opposition in the MC House, said there was a major problem of overflowing sewers in the outer wards. He said: “When we raised the matter, the Mayor also pulled up officials of the Operations and Maintenance Wing during the meeting today. When some of the councillors raised the issue of mushrooming of illegal colonies, the MC Commissioner gave directions to the staff concerned to take immediate action against the illegal colonies.”

Dang said a councillor had also levelled allegations against an officer for allegedly taking bribe of Rs 10,000 for allowing banned submersible pumps. The higher authorities have assured to look into the matter.

He said they had demanded from the Mayor to call a meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee at the earliest. “The Mayor has assured them that the meeting will be held within a week and after that, the work orders related to various development works will be issued,” Dang said.

“Earlier, we had staged protests at two zones of the MC. If our demands are not met, we will be forced to mark protests against the MC once again,” he added.

A BJP councillor said: “Residents are suffering a lot due to overflowing sewers in various wards. The unsanitary conditions are giving an invitation to diseases.”
