Karnal conducts survey to tackle traffic

To resolve traffic issues in the next 20 years, Karnal Smart City Ltd, which is looking after the smart city project, has started a traffic survey on major roads of the city.

The authorities claim it will help in predicting the peak-hour traffic flow on major roads and suggest alternative routes to handle congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow. Besides, the data will help provide parking facilities at various points of the city.

“Under pan-city plan of the smart city project, we have given the responsibility of conducting the traffic survey and providing the data for future planning to a Delhi-based company, TTL Engineering Pvt Ltd. The survey is being done to know the volume of different vehicles along with the capacity of the roads. The data will help us analyse the ground reality of the city so that we can come up with the best solution to ease traffic congestion in the next 20 years,” said Rajiv Mehta, Commissioner of the Karnal Municipal Corporation, and CEO of Karnal Smart City Ltd.

The company had started the survey on August 24 and would continue till mid-September, Mehta said, adding that the company had deployed employees at more than 20 roads of the city for the survey where the traffic volume was high.

Besides, a survey is also being conducted near the roundabouts to know the volume of traffic along with people’s traffic sense. A video is also being recorded to analyse the complete scenario of the city.

A roadside parking survey is also being carried out to check the demand of parking space. “We are also collecting data of pedestrian behaviour on road, if they are crossing roads through designated zebra-crossing points or not,” he added.

Mehta said to determine the volume of public transport passengers, a survey to analyse the boarding and alighting at major public transport spots was being conducted. “With the help of police, we are identifying the place of origin and destination of commuters to know their travelling pattern,” he added.
