Students of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) on Thursday staged a protest against the new parking and commuting system introduced by the authorities.

They blocked both entry gates to the campus, raised slogans against the authorities for banning vehicles and introducing transportation system like cycles and electric carts. No student vehicle was allowed inside the campus.

Under the new parking system, students have to commute by using cycles and e-rickshaws after going through mandatory security checks at both gates. Students are required to park their vehicles at the paid parking stands.

Engineering student Amarpal Singh said, “The new system will put extra financial burden on our pocket.” The students are also demanding revision in the rules for movement of vehicles. As per the present system, only vehicles registered with varsity, teaching faculty are being allowed inside the campus. Rest, all of the visitors have to park their vehicles at the parking or use cycles offered by a private company.

“We are asking that the vehicles of faculty must also be banned, just like students. We are not solely causing pollution in the campus,” said Kajal, a law student.

The students have protested the decision of the authorities. Harpreet Singh, president, Guru Nanak Student Union, said, “We will discuss the matter with the varsity authorities on Friday.”
