The police recovered only seven rolls of plastic strings on the occasion of Lohri and Maghi in the city.
However, the Deputy Commissioner had constituted a special team for the implementation of ban orders. The police made tall claims, but the administration failed to seize the strings after the death of a youth.
The string is available in the market, but shopkeepers are not selling it in shops. String traders made personal networks and self-style agents have emerged.
A police officer said the string traders did not store the string in the city. They have stored it in nearby towns and arrange the delivery of rolls on demand, he added.
Sandeep Singh, a social activist, said, “The police failed to curb the sale of plastic string. How we can expect that the same police can control drugs? The Deputy Commissioner only imposed the ban, but it was never implemented.”
Naveen Kumar, a victim of string, said, “I have faced a life threat due to string while travelling on an elevated road. Children were flying kites with plastic string openly. No one asked them from where they got that string.”
