As many as 23 persons were booked in connection with three firing incidents last evening.

In the first case, a shopkeeper was shot at by six aides of a jail inmate but he escaped unhurt. Victim Ranjit Singh, a resident of Marimegha village, said Gurcharan Singh of the same village, presently lodged in the Amritsar jail, wanted him to recharge his mobile number. Since Gurcharan is in jail, Ranjit denied recharging his phone, thinking it would land him in trouble.

In another case, Gurjinder Singh of Kirtowal village has been booked for opening fire in the air. The police said he did so after a verbal duel with someone in the village. A case under Section 336 of the IPC, and 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered by the Harike police.

Meanwhile, the Jhabal police have registered a case against 15 persons in connection with a firing case in Mannan village. Complainant Gurpreet Singh of Thathgarh village accused Manpreet Singh Bau, his brother Love, wife Sonia and associates Vicki, Angrej Singh and Daljit Singh of firing at him. He said Manpreet suspected that he had a relation with his sister. He said that he managed to escape by crouching down. Sections 307, 452, 336, 148 and 149 of the IPC, and 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act have been slapped.
