Amritsar, January 15

CPI activists here on Tuesday held a demonstration against the Central Government over the filing of a chargesheet against nine persons, including its national council member Kanhaiya Kumar and former JNU student Umar Khalid, in a sedition case.

Holding banners and raising slogans, the protestors led by CPI state secretary Bant Singh Brar took out a march from Pink Plaza to Hall Gate.

Addressing the protestors, Brar said, “After three years, the NDA Government filed the chargesheet keeping in view the forthcoming general election. The Centre is hell bent on polarising the voters. It is playing obstructionist and reactionary politics with the objective of imposing saffron agenda on constitutional institutions.”

To demand pension and employment for marginal sections, Communist parties will hold a rally in Ludhiana on January 28. Senior national leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja will address the rally.

He said the MSME sector was crippled and immense job losses were suffered due to “lopsided implementation” of demonetisation and the GST.

He added that there had been a slug fight on the Panthic agenda between the Congress and the SAD (Badal) in the state.

Senior Communist leader Amarjit Singh Asal said Kahaiya was a national council member of the CPI and was likely to contest from Bihar’s Begusarai parliamentary seat in the forthcoming general election.
