Drugs worth Rs 2 crore in black seized

In continuation of its drive against misuse of ayurveda medicines, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) confiscated yet another haul of drugs, including Kamini and Barshsha, from a residential complex turned into a godown in the Golden avenue area here in the late evening today.

The seized medicines have high opium content and are being widely misused by drug addicts. According to NCB officials the confiscated medicines are worth more than Rs 2 crore in the black market while their actual cost is pegged at Rs 70 to Rs 80 lakh.

The raiding team was headed by the SP, NCB, Sachin Guleria. He said the godown belonged to Rajpal Pansari, who is one of top three dealers of medicine in the city. The stock seized, include 17 to 20 lakh tablets of Kamini and 2,000 boxes of Barshsha.

Godown owner booked under NDPS Act

Following seizure of a huge quantity of ayurvedic drug containing high content of opium from an illegal godown at Banke Bihari Gari, Batala Road yesterday, the city police have booked its owner, identified as Sunil Kumar, and registered a case under various sections of the NDPS Act against him.

A joint raid conducted by the NCB, the city police and the Health Department led to confiscation of the 6,000 bottles of Kamini, 4,000 bottles of Barshasha and 1,000 bottles of Habb-E-Mumsik tablets containing over 30 per cent of opium. These medicines, stated to be worth several crores, were stashed in an illegal godown.

According to sources, the accused used to sell loose tablets at a price enhanced by two and half times. Kaustubh Sharma, zonal director, NCB, said owner of the godown used to sell medicines on black.

The police also arrested Sunil Kumar, a relative of Sanjay Kumar, who was nabbed earlier by the NCB. Officials said further investigation was under progress to unearth the entire nexus of illegal medicines.
