Tarn Taran, January 8

Former BJP councillors of the local Municipal Council have decided not to support the SAD candidate from the Tarn Taran constituency. Harmeet Singh Sandhu is contesting the Assembly elections on the SAD ticket from the constituency.

Former BJP district president Navreet Singh Safipur said he along with seven BJP councillors would not support Sandhu.  Jaswant Singh Padda, district BJP president, said he had already extended his support to the SAD candidate.

The local units of the SAD and the BJP have been at loggerheads since long. A violent clash between workers of both parties took place during the Municipal Council elections two years ago. Raja Joshi, the brother of BJP minister Anil Joshi, had a narrow escape in a firing incident during the clash.

Navreet Safipur and the seven councillors, along with other office-bearers of the BJP, had sent their en masse resignation from the primary membership of the party around five months ago. The party had accepted the resignation of the leaders.
