Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has come up with a facility to hold viva-voce examinations of its PhD scholars through video conferencing.

The video conference facility is available for examiners placed at far off places. The right to visit the university or go for video conferencing has been reserved with the examiner by GNDU authorities.

The concerned examiner is supposed to take viva of the scholar virtually in the presence of faculty members at the office of Dean Academic Affairs Kamaljit Singh. The university also hopes to engage examiners of far off institutes of national repute and foreign examiners. Besides, saving time, holding examination as soon as an external examiner is decided.

Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, said, “The facility is one of its kinds. It will speed up the procedure to impart degrees for our scholars. If examiners are short of time; the examination had to be conducted as per their schedule. There had been a delay of months in few cases.”

“We plan to engage faculty from Indian Institutes of Technology, management institutes among others under this new facility. We want our students to face best from their field. However, this has not been made mandatory. It is a choice given to the examiner,” he added. The step will also help the varsity to save on their finances to be spent on the accommodation, travel of the examiner concerned.

Two viva-voce examinations have already been conducted in departments of human genetics and electronics technology in the last week at Guru Nanak Dev University. The entire examination shall be recorded.
