A city-based NGO, Amritsar Civil Society washed the statue of Jawahar Lal Nehru and cleaned the area around fountain at the Nehru Shopping Complex here today. Activists of civil society alleged that the administration did not show respect to leaders of the nation.

Parmod Bali, a member of the Amritsar Civil Society, said he noticed heaps of garbage around the statue of Jawahar Lal Nehru at the shopping complex a few days ago. Society members complained to the Municipal Corporation regarding filth, he added.

The MC had reportedly removed the garbage, but did not cut grass and clean the fountain area. On the call of Amritsar Civil Society, several activists gathered at the Nehru Shopping Complex, cleaned the podium and washed the statue today. They also cut grass in the complex.

Rajneesh Talwar, another activist of Amritsar Civil Society, said the Amritsar Improvement Trust had constructed a fountain near the statue, which was now lying defunct. Activists also removed posters from podium of the statue.
