NGO: Need to streamline traffic to improve air quality

AMRITSAR: With so much talk on pollution, its impact on human life and poor air quality in the national capital, city-based residents, environmental activists feel that there is a need to take little steps to bring curb pollution and small changes can lead to bigger success.

Amritsar, November 16

With so much talk on pollution, its impact on human life and poor air quality in the national capital, city-based residents, environmental activists feel that there is a need to take little steps to bring curb pollution and small changes can lead to bigger success.

Indu Aurora, vice-president of a non-governmental organisation(NGO), Voice of Amritsar, said, “There is a need to streamline vehicular traffic, especially autos, which plays a major role in polluting the air quality. Politicians need to rise above vote banks. Stubble-burning needs strict monitoring. Reduce the number of private vehicles and increase public transport. Factories and dairies should be shifted outside city limits.”

The NGO had been promoting sapling plantation in several parts of the district. Many city-based educational institutions have also planted vertical gardens to reduce carbon emissions and promote greenery around various institutions. — TNS
