PS Bhatty, an environmentalist, has said that planting trees according to the ground water levels of each block should be a priority. “Plantation should be done so as to retain ground water level to the maximum. Like in areas effected by water clogging, trees that help absorb excess water should be planted. Similarly, varieties of acacia, trees with lesser leaves and shrubs should be planted in areas with low level of ground water level. The sideways should be planted with shady trees and the dividers should have shrubs and flowering plants.” Bhatty’s initiative in collaboration with Punjab Pollution Control Board has set a target of planting 4 lakh trees in the district.

“We had conducted a similar campaign last year, and also made available 237 varieties of plants that suit the city environment. We had also developed defence lines for Army areas by planting 15,000 trees,” he said.

Water conservation has been a issue of primary concern for city administration in past years as well. Despite the check on water wastage and ban on using drinking water for washing and cleaning purposes, the violations happen rampantly. “The most effective way should be to come up with a plan to refuel the ground water levels. Now, with the administration promoting use of treated water for irrigation, awareness and education regarding the same should help in more people adopting practices that save water,” said Bhatty.
