Amritsar, January 13

The sale of banned plastic string was rampant in the city today as kite flying contests were organised to mark Lohri celebrations. Its use left a number of commuters injured. The ban on the sale and purchase of the plastic string, popularly known as Chinese thread, has failed to deter several traders.

In one such mishap, a bike-borne youth sustained a severe cut on his throat after he came in contact with such a string hanging near the Ghanupur Kale turn. Twelve stitches had to be applied on his neck wound. Similarly, two minor injuries were also reported at a prominent private hospital located on the GT road.

PS Bhatty, noted environmentalist, said until a complete ban on the manufacturing of the synthetic string is ensured, it is impossible to curb its sale. He said efforts to discourage the young and school-going children were minimal. Only some stern actions can yield results.

A youth, wishing not to be named, said it was not difficult to get a roll of the Chinese string though it had become a little costly. He said almost all the youth involved in kite flying contests during the festival used the synthetic string.

DCP (Law and Order) Amrik Singh Powar said the police were serious about it and even buses were checked to nail those bringing it in bulk. He said the police had registered many criminal cases against those who were found selling or in possession of the synthetic string. More steps should be taken, he said, adding that the manufacturing of the string should be banned.
