With poll results out and the Congress Party under Captain Amarinder Singh getting a clear cut mandate, city residents expect that the new government will check lawlessness, lack of governance and prevalence of drugs.

They said, “The Congress has got a clear cut majority and no political compulsions can digress it from its agenda provided the party has a will to bring the state back on the track of development.”

Abhilasha Kapoor, a local youngster said, “I expect that next government focuses on women’s safety, ending nepotism and drugs. Moreover, I am concerned that the local youth are able to get jobs in the state. Presently, being from Amritsar, I am working at Gurugram. I will like to come home if employment opportunities are created in Punjab.”

“The state is facing a crisis due to issues related to the SYL, drugs and farmers debt. Only a wise leader can bring the state out of the prevailing chaos. Residents do not feel safe at their homes or on roads. The government needs to bring back the sense of security,” said Rajwinder Kaur, a senior citizen.

Another demand of residents is strengthening of health and education so that the poor could benefit from it.

“It will be a big achievement even if the new government does not fullfil its promise to give smart phones to youngsters, but manages to provide quality health care and education to the people,” said Harnam Singh, another senior citizen.

Citizens say the successful implementation of previous government’s plans, including the bus rapid transit system (BRTS), which already seems practically unviable will be another challenge for the new government.

“It will be wrong for the new government to scrap projects of the previous government by reasoning that these are not workable. The new government should continue development works and make them successful,” said another resident Harkirat Singh.

The new government should also let the police and other agencies work without any political pressure say people in the holy city.

With a huge list of promises made to the electorate and the state facing large number of problems, residents say it would not be easy for the new dispensation to manage affairs.

“We do not expect any miracles, but the new government should keep in mind that people have reposed faith in the Congress. Elected representatives should try to live up to expectations of voters,” said another resident Joginder Singh Syal.
