Congress leader Preneet Kaur, former Union minister, has hailed the Narendra Modi government at the Centre for passing an ordinance on death penalty for child rape. “This will definitely act as a deterrent,” she said at the launch ceremony of the 15th chapter of the FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO), the women business wing of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), here on Monday. Headquartered in New Delhi, the FLO’s chapters across India represent over 6,000 women entrepreneurs and professionals.

The Amritsar chapter will have 130 members and will also support the education of 250 underprivileged students. Preneet Kaur praised the advent of women in every field.

Bollywood director-choreographer Farah Khan and actor-director Deepa Sahi were more eloquent on speaking about women safety and empowerment. “We need to start teaching our sons, not our daughters, to behave themselves and respect girls,” said Farah Khan. Encouraging women to follow their dreams and find the strength to make something of themselves, Khan said, “You have to be your own inspiration. Motherhood, marriage or anything else should not be an excuse to hang your boots and quit.”

Pinky Reddy, president, FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO), was happy to launch a second chapter in Punjab, after Ludhiana, to reach out to women entrepreneurs in the state. “With over 34 years of experience, the FLO has been promoting entrepreneurship and professional excellence in women. Amritsar, the cultural and economic hub of the state, is a strategic choice for the a chapter in the Punjab with several dynamic and successful women entrepreneurs from the region showing keen interest in joining hands with us.”

She said that the latest ordinance on death penalty for child rape should be made an example by government by proper implementation.

Meanwhile, Gowri Bansal was announced as chairperson the of the Amritsar Chapter along with Arushi Verma as senior vice-chairperson, Manjot Dhillon as vice-chairperson, Dr Surangma Sharma as secretary, Shikha Sareen as treasurer and Himani Arora as joint treasurer.
