Fall in vegetable prices brings relief

City residents heave a sigh of relief as the price of tomato has started coming down, which had upset their house budget.

Dealers attributed the fall in the prices of vegetables due to sufficient supply. The supply of vegetables from Shimla is coming regularly these days. Trucks loaded with vegetables can be seen reaching here daily. Earlier, owing to a heavy rain in Shimla, barely two to three trucks were coming to the city.

Earlier, tomato was selling at Rs 100 to 120 per kg, but now it is being sold for Rs 70 to 80 per kg.

Cauliflower, which was available at Rs 80 to 90 per kg, is now being sold for Rs 50 to 60 per kg. The prices of peas also came down from Rs 120 to 90 per kg and those of seedless cucumber from Rs 90 to 70 per kg.

Surprisingly, the prices of onion have seen a slight hike as earlier it was sold for Rs 20 per kg. Now it is being sold for Rs 35 to Rs 40.

Pumpkin is available at Rs 30 to Rs 20 per kg, which was earlier available at Rs 50 per kg. The prices of ladyfingers rose from Rs 25 to Rs 40.

According to traders, the prices of onion rose due to heavy rains occurred in various parts of Himachal, leading to decay of a huge quantity of onion.

Sudesh Nain, a city resident, said, “It gives some relief as the prices of vegetables have come down slightly.”

“Moreover, we have to think a lot to maintain our house budget as the rising prices of vegetables are disturbing our household budget,” he added.
