Lack of monitoring may pose a hurdle in the door-to-door garbage collection work being taken up by the Municipal Corporation on its own from May 1 as JITF company is stopping this work on April 30 as per the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order.

In recent meeting held at MCB office, it has been decided to take workers from JITF company, which are presently doing this door-to-door garbage collection work in the city and take this work from them only, while it has planned to take equipment on rent.

This decision has raised a serious question whether the MC would able to handle door-to-door garbage collection work on its own as in the absence of lack of monitoring and no fixation of accountability, it has failed in maintaining hygiene and measuring up to the expectations and satisfaction of residents here.

The MC is doing the cleaning work on its own in the city and it has around 800 sanitation workers deployed for this work, but despite that it has failed to improve sanitation conditions at the ground level as heaps of garbage can be found lying on roadsides.

Even councillors in the general house meeting have said that at present, the MCB has 700 regular sanitation workers, 138 daily wagers and 40 workers have been hired through outsourcing, but the condition is such that in the absence of any monitoring by the MCB, most workers don’t come on work regularly.

Senior deputy mayor Tarsem Goyal said, “It is not an easy job and it is a big challenge for the MCB and we are seriously working on it and trying to find out some workout.”

He said the MC needed to make a mechanism to keep an effective monitoring at the ground level as earlier these workers were doing work as per the company’s norms and requirement, but they will have to work as per MCB norms and working.
