Bathinda, June 26

Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, was celebrated across the district with fervour today.

People of the Muslim community in large numbers clad in their best traditional outfits gathered at local mosques in the city to offer prayers, besides exchanging gifts and sweets with friends and loved ones.

They offered prayers at a function, which was held at the eid-gah, located near the Cotton Market in the city.

Special food items, including feniyan, sevian, chicken and mutton biryani, were prepared by the people at their homes in the evening.

Eid-ul-Fitr is rightly known as the “feast of fast”. ‘Biryani’ is a popular dish. The day’s celebrations also call for desserts that are rich, dense and oozing with flavours. Desserts including ‘meethi sewayan’, ‘sheer khurma’ and ‘phirni’ sweetened the occasion.

“Traditional sweets are often prepared and exchanged in most households on the day of Eid,” said Jasmine Khan, a city resident.
