Youth commits suicide, two travel agents booked

The Canal Colony police on Wednesday booked two Nakodar-based travel agents on the charge of abetment of suicide. The move came after a city youth ended his life after being allegedly duped of Rs 12 lakh by them on the pretext of sending him and his cousin abroad.

The deceased has been identified as Sandeep Singh, a resident of Lal Singh Basti.

A case under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered on the complaint of Malkit Singh, the deceased’s father. However, no arrest has been made yet. The police are conducting raids at Jalandhar as well as Nakodar.

Information regarding the accused has been shared with the Jalandhar police. As per the complaint, travel agents Jaspal Singh and Malkit Singh had arranged a two-year visa and work for Sandeep in Dubai.

Sandeep had paid Rs 12 lakh to the accused with the commitment that after working for two years in Dubai, they would arrange a Canadian visa for him.

According to the deceased’s father, when his son reached Dubai, the company gave him work only for one month, after which he remained out of job for 13 months.

Subsequently, he returned to India. He was under stress as the agents refused to give back his money. He committed suicide by hanging himself at his home on Tuesday.

Devinder Singh, SHO of the Canal Colony police station, said the police were conducting raids for the arrest of both travel agents and they would be nabbed soon.
