‘Car theft’ keeps cops on toes

A complaint of car theft against two men, who had allegedly ‘fled’ with an Audi Q7 from the Sector 8 market around 3:30 pm today, kept the UT police on toes. The police managed to contact the suspects, who reportedly claimed that the owner himself gave them the car keys. The police said the two parties had a property-related dispute.

The complainant, Gurjot Singh (28), who knew the suspects, identified as Tejbir and Angrez, cited a dispute with them as the reason for the ‘theft’. Gurjot, an IT professional and a resident of Ambala, owns an office near Sindhi Sweets in Sector 8.

While talking to Chandigarh Tribune, he said, “I have known the duo for a couple of years and had a dispute with them. They were supposed to return some money to me. They were sitting in my office for an hour before they take away my car.”

Gurjot added, “Around 3:30 pm, I left for the Estate Office in Sector 17 in my colleague’s car. Meanwhile, I called up at my office and told one of my employees to take out an LED from the car, keys of which were lying on a desk in my room. My employees then informed me that the car was missing.”

According to the victim, his helper had seen the suspects taking away the car keys from his office. Gurjot claimed that Rs 50,000, a laptop and an LED were lying in the car. 

The victim rang up ‘100’ and informed the police.

The police said they received the information at 5:53 pm. As per the complainant, the suspects were residents of Ambala and had a property dispute with him. The complainant had called up the suspects and enquired about the car. They reportedly told him that they had taken it away. 

The victim and the suspects spoke four to five times after the incident took place, the police said.

Meanwhile, the police started searching for the suspects and contacted them on phone late in the evening. The police said they were verifying the facts with both the suspects and the complainant before registering a case of theft. 

“The suspects claimed that Gurjot himself gave them the car keys as he owed them some money. Investigation is still under way,” the police said. The suspects were near Ambala and were on the way to the city when this report was filed.
