Chandigarh, January 4

Army experts discussed stress management at the Evening Studies Auditorium in Panjab University (PU), here today.

Col Gursewak Singh (retd) said, “Stress is part of our life. Every action has a reaction. If there is pressure to respond, it creates stress. Such amount of stress is required. The problem arises when it crosses certain threshold level. It is then called bad stress.”

Maj Navdeep Singh said, “Stress and strain in military service is connected with disability benefits. The reality is that health profile of military veterans is poorer than civilians. But sad part is that stress is being attributed to domestic problems. A soldier is posted under shadow of gun for 10 months and he is not being able to attend to property issues, parents’ health and other important things. He would be under stress. It is being connected with family life to deny him disability benefits.”

Lt Gen KJ Singh (retd), former Western Army Commander, discussed his own experiments with pranayam and breathing exercises in the Art of Living to relieve stress.

Brig Nawab Singh Heer (retd) said materialism had not made us happier. Village life was tougher but people had time for each other, he added.

Col Surjan Randhawa (retd) said people were more inclined towards negative stress in life. “Youths are after money and materialism is causing stress,” he said.
