Can flyover reduce traffic snarls?

Chandigarh has a tag of the City beautiful and is very well planned as compared to other cities. However, the decision of the UT administration to construct a flyover at Tribune Chowk to manage traffic is wrong. The authorities concerned should take this as a challenge and come up with new ideas to deal with traffic management. In Zirakpur, we can see there is about 2-km long flyover. However, beneath the flyover, traffic is alarming. The police should be deployed at heavy rush points and they should be trained to manage the traffic. The roads can be widened instead of constructing a flyover if possible. There is also a need to make separate lane for two-wheelers. If the flyover is built, the authorities concerned would themselves see that the purpose was not served. — Gulshan Kumar, Chandigarh

Wine shop at intersection

A wine shop has come up in front of Ivy Hospital, Sector 71, Mohali. If this was not enough, the wine shop is located right at the intersection and the footpath. The authorities should wake up from their deep slumber and take  stern action. As there is no parking space, jams would become a new normal on this stretch.  — P Sandhu, Mohali

Every Footpath encroached upon

In Mohali, footpaths have not only been encroached upon by vendors but also by water supply lines and transformers. The authorities concerned have laid an external water line and a transformer on the footpath which hampers free movement of pedestrians. As a result, one has to walk on the road which can lead to a major accident. The administration must ensure that obstacles should be removed from the footpaths at the earliest.— Col TBS Bedi (Retd), Mohali
