After sudden spike in the number of dengue cases and death of the 55-year-old resident in Nabha, the District Health Department, on Friday, deployed extra manpower to curb the outbreak of disease in the town.

Taking precautionary measure, the Health Department carried out special drive in Nabha on Thursday and Friday during which larvae found at seven breeding sites were destroyed immediately. Officials of the Health Department disclosed that they were receiving regular complaints regarding breeding of dengue mosquitoes from several parts of  Nabha.

District epidemiologist, Dr Sumeet Singh, said, “We saw a sudden rise in dengue cases, which prompted response action by the Health Department. In last one week, eight new dengue cases have been reported from the town. One person has died of suspected dengue.”

“Therefore, we have already deployed extra manpower in the town.

Twenty eight health officials in nine teams are working round-the-clock to prevent the spread of dengue,” he added.

A 55-year-old woman of Nabha died of dengue last week. Officials of the Health Department said dengue mosquitoes spread as drains and sewerage was choked in Nabha. Though the Health Department sprayed larvicides at breeding spots, the problem would continue if water accumulation was not prevented, they added.

“All precautionary measures have been taken, but accumulation of water has to be stopped immediately. If the same situation continues then mosquitoes will continue to breed and spread disease,” said Dr Sumeet Singh.

Till now, 121 positive cases of dengue have been reported in Patiala district so far.
