Chandigarh, December 6

The president of the Bar Association at the district courts here allegedly slapped an advocate over the issue of parking on the court complex today.

Ravinder Singh Bassi, aka Jolly, allegedly slapped Shiv Murthi as the latter parked his motorcycle in an area outside chambers where chairs were placed for advocates. Murthi submitted a police complaint, following which a DDR was registered at the Sector 36 police station.

Bassi stated that some lawyers had approached him a few days ago with the request to place some chairs in the open area outside the chambers so that advocates could bask in the sun in their free time. Murthi, however, parked his vehicle in the area. A constable of the Chandigarh Police deployed there asked him to not park his bike there. The cop told him that Jolly had given direction in this regard.

Murthi then allegedly confronted Jolly saying who was he to dictate where he would park his bike. Jolly then slapped him and both came to blows.

When contacted, Murthi said he reached the court at around 11.30 am and found the parking lot full. He parked his bike near the chambers and a policeman asked him to move it as per president’s instructions. He was then taken to Jolly, who misbehaved with him, he alleged. He further alleged that Bassi slapped him and he hit him back.

Murthi claimed to have received multiple injuries in the scuffle and lodged a police complaint.

Nasib Singh, SHO, Sector 36 police station, said, “We received a call on 100 and registered a DDR on Murthi’s complaint.” He added that the complainant’s medical examination was conducted at the GMSH- 16.

Further action on the complaint would be taken after receiving the medical examination report, the cop said.
