Chandigarh, June 24

The Crime Branch of the UT police has arrested gangster Sampat Nehra’s aide, who was wanted in a two-year-old assault case.

The police said following a tip-off, the accused, Manpreet Bhangu of Kharar, was arrested in Sector 46 on Friday. He was produced in court on Saturday, which sent him to two-day police remand.

Crime Branch officials said Manpreet was active in student politics when he studied at a college in Sector 26 in 2016. Then, he had a dispute with another student of the college, identified as Jaspreet Singh, who was a supporter of a rival student wing.

The police said Manpreet, along with Nehra and others, had attacked Jaspreet at the parking area of the CITCO food joint in Sector 10. The victim was attacked with sharp weapons, leaving him seriously injured.

A case was registered against Manpreet, Nehra and others at the Sector 3 police station. While two persons were arrested in the case, Manpreet and Nehra were absconding since then.

The Haryana Police had arrested Nehra, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, earlier this month in Hyderabad.
