The Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, has allowed the dumping of unprocessed organic and horticulture waste at the dumping ground of Dadu Majra. Sources said the MC decision came after the garbage processing was filled to capacity with unprocessed garbage.

Notably, Municipal Commissioner KK Yadav had directed the management of the plant to accept all waste generated by the city.

Sources said since the plant failed to process all waste, heaps of garbage accumulated inside it. Due to it, the management of the plant requested the MC to help them come out from the problem.

KK Yadav himself visited the plant on Thursday and after reviewing the situation, allowed the dumping of organic and horticulture waste at the landfill.

Notably, the city generates about 450 tonnes of garbage daily, half of which is organic waste. When contacted, KK Yadav said the situation at the plant was serious. “In view of this, organic and horticulture waste will not be given to it for now. The plant has been allowed to take only solid waste. The MC will plan to solve the problem caused by solid waste. We are working on a plan to set up compost plants at parks to process horticulture waste,” he said.

On the other hand, Congress councillor Devinder Singh Babla said the plant management should accept and process all waste in view of the NGT order . A resident of the area, Sumit Raj, said in no case, the plant should be allowed to throw waste at the landfill as it would cause heath problems.
