Patiala, August 11

Employees of various departments held a protest rally against the Punjab government under the banner of Joint Action Committee Punjab and UT Employees here on Saturday.

Irked over delay in release of the DA and arrears, employees were up in arms against the ruling dispensation. The protesters staged a sit-in for hours altogether on the Mall road. In the afternoon, hundreds of protesters marched towards the Chief Minister’s residence. However, they were stopped near Fountain Chowk by the heavy police force. A scuffle broke out between protesters and policemen at the Fountain Chowk. However, the police did not resort to lathi charge.

The employee called off their protest in the evening after a written assurance of meeting with political secretary to the CM, Captain Sandeep Sandhu. The meeting of the employee union with political secretary has been scheduled for August 20 in the CM’s office. — TNS
