MC Commissioner gives meeting a miss

Chandigarh, May 17

Child Rights’ Commission chairperson Harjinder Kaur had called for a meeting with the Director Health Services (DHS) and the Municipal Corporation Commissioner today. However, the MC Commissioner gave it a miss and sent other employees while the DHS attended the meeting in person. The meeting was called by the CCPCR in view of the increasing menace of stray dogs in the city.

The chairperson informed that she has sought a detailed report of all cases of dog bites involving children. While the MC is providing free treatment to all victims, the CCPCR had suggested that medical aid be provided to them at their homes. However, the DHS has told the chairperson that if the doctors were to visit all the victims, it would mean that the dispensaries would stay empty.

Harjinder Kaur, while talking to the Chandigarh Tribune, said, “Despite all the measures, the biggest challenge is posed by the fact that the number of dog bites is not increasing”. She has said that another meeting will soon be called on the issue after a report is submitted by the MC.

Taking a suo motu notice of a series of news reports carried in these columns on the extent of increasing dog-bite cases in the city, the CCPCR had called the local MC Commissioner and UT Director Health Services with relevant record and action taken or proposed report in the matter.Chandigarh Tribune had been highlighting a series of dog-bite cases which are on the rise in the tricity and the plight of the residents, who are falling prey to the fury of stray dogs.
