Residents here have flayed the installation of new paver blocks by replacing the old ones in several parts of the town, terming it as a sheer wastage of public funds.

Paver blocks are being replaced at several parts across the town by the Mohali Municipal Corporation.

NS Kalsi, president of the HM Houses Welfare Association, Mohali, alleged that public funds worth several crores were being spent unnecessarily by replacing the old paver blocks, which are in good condition, with the new ones.

“It’s not only a sheer wastage of funds but also raises suspicion. Why good condition paver blocks are being removed. At most such places, paver blocks were laid just four-five years ago,” claimed Kalsi. He said the life of paver blocks is said to be more than 20 years.

Old paver blocks have already been replaced in Phase 4, Sector 67 and some other places.

Expressing similar sentiments, another local resident Balwinder Singh Kumbhra demanded a high-level inquiry in the matter. “We fail to understand the logic behind the move. If some paver block/interlocking tile has broken, it can be replaced only. Certainly, something is fishy in it and that needs to be inquired into,” said Kumbhra.

When contacted, Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh said he would seek a detailed report from corporation officials in the matter. “I will definitely verify all facts in it,” said the Mayor.
