MoU for financial help to thalassaemia patients

CHANDIGARH: The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, today signed a MoU with Coal India Limited (CIL).

Chandigarh, June 12

The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, today signed a MoU with Coal India Limited (CIL). Under it, the CIL will provide a grant, amounting to Rs 2 crore, to 20 poor patients (Rs 10 lakh each) with thalassaemia major for bone marrow transplants. The general manager of the CIL, SN Singh, and PGI Director Dr Jagat Ram signed the agreement.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had initiated this programme last year. The firm will provide the amount under its corporate social responsibility.

The programme is already running successfully at four major centres in India. The PGI, Chandigarh, is the fifth centre and will cater to patients with thalassaemia from the north-west region of India.

Speaking on this occasion, PGI Director Dr Jagat Ram thanked Coal India Limited for their gesture and also thanked the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
