A two-day international meet on menopausal management for general practitioners, nurses and midwives for South- East Asian Region started here today.

The first of its kind meet is being organised by the Indian Menopause Society (IMS) in collaboration with the WHO regional office for South East Asia. Besides India, delegates from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Nepal, Maldieves, Sri Lanka and Thailand are attending the expert group meet.

In her inaugural address, Dr Neelam Aggarwal, president, IMS, said there was an emergent need to generate a massive awareness campaign to make women aware of their health especially during the pre and post menopause phases.

She said good clinical and practical training material need to be provided, besides providing the required briefing manual to primary care physicians regarding hormonal changes in women between the age group of 50 to 60.

Dr Neena Raina, director, Department of Family Health Gender and Life Course, and coordinator, Health Through the Life Course (HLC), emphasised on the need of evolving a programme to care for the health of women in the age group of 50 to 60 especially when they started with the menopausal process as this age group was not covered in any health programme so far.

Dr Meeta Singh, chairperson, Peer Review Task Force, and Editor of two guidelines one on menopause society and other for osteoporosis and past president, IMS, and Dr Seema Sharma, secretary general, IMS, Jaipur, also addressed the inaugural session.
