Chandigarh, August 25
On the first day of the scheduled low water supply, as many as 737 calls were received at the MC office for water tankers.
Till the filing of this report, MC officials had provided about 350 water tankers in different areas in the city. Officials said most complaints were received from Sectors 22, 38 (West) 44, 45 and some southern areas. Residents of Sector 25 said they were not getting proper water supply for the past three days.
JS Gogia, general secretary, Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh, said, “We have been hearing about 24-hour supply for long, but we are not even getting limited supply of water twice a day. The Kajauli waterworks are frequently under repair.”
Though the low pressure water supply was scheduled for Sunday and Monday, officials said it appeared that the situation might not be normal even on Tuesday. They said due to a fault in the pumping machinery of the Kajauli waterworks, Phase 1 and 2, the city had received less water. According to the MC, the water was to be supplied at low pressure from 5 am to 8 am and 6 pm to 8.30 pm for two days. However, those living on upper floors said they were not getting water at all.
Residents gherao Mayor
Chandigarh: City residents had to face a tough time as there was no water supply on Sunday evening. Irate residents gheraoed Mayor Rajesh Kalia at the Sector 15 water supply office of the MC. Kalia had gone to check the situation there. The residents alleged favouritism in sending water tankers. Arun Sood, chairman of the Water Supply Committee, said due to the mismanagement of officials not even a single drop of water had reached the city from the Kajauli waterworks since Saturday morning. “From Monday, we are going to hire 50 more water tankers on rent,” said Sood.
