Two teenagers, Class XI students, who were reportedly in love, died after taking poison at the Botanical Garden near Khuda Lahora on Sunday evening.

The police said the boy, a resident of EWS Colony, Dhanas, and the girl, a resident of Phase I, Mohali, both Class XI students of Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 37, were in love.

Today, they arrived at the Botanical Garden and sat on a bench. The police said according to visitors, the minors were sitting and talking to each other. Suddenly they took out something and consumed it.

Both victims became unconscious and fell on the ground. The visitors raised the alarm and informed the police.

The police reached the spot and rushed the victims to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, from where they were referred to the PGI. The police said the girl died first, while the boy died after battling for life for some time. Their parents were informed, who reached the hospital. Police investigation revealed that both victims had told their parents about their affair and they were okay with it, but wanted them to wait for the right time. “Their parents had asked them to complete their studies and get to the right age before taking any further step, but the victims decided to take the extreme step,” said a police official.

The police have initiated inquest proceedings into the matter at the Sarangpur police station. No suicide note was found from the spot.
