UT SSP appears before CAT

CHANDIGARH: UT Senior Superintendent of Police Nilambari Jagdale today appeared before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in a contempt petition filed by Jagtar Singh over non-compliance of the order in his case.

Chandigarh, March 18

UT Senior Superintendent of Police Nilambari Jagdale today appeared before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in a contempt petition filed by Jagtar Singh over non-compliance of the order in his case.

Jagtar Singh, a constable in the Chandigarh Police, was dismissed from the service in a rape case. Subsequently, he was acquitted in the case by the court.

The Tribunal directed the Chandigarh Police to comply with the order passed in 2017 in the case of Jagtar Singh.

Singh, who, along with four other policemen, was booked for allegedly raping a girl in 2014 at Khuda Lahora, was acquitted by the court. Singh later filed a petition in the CAT seeking to be reinstated as he was acquitted in the case.

While the revision petition of other four constables for reinstatement was dismissed by the CAT, the Tribunal directed the police to set aside the order of dismissal against Singh as he had more than three years of service.

The court thus ordered the UT police in 2017 that if they want to take action against Singh, then they should follow the Rule 12.21 of the Punjab Police Services by holding a departmental inquiry against him. The Chandigarh Police, however, moved the High Court against the tribunal order. But they failed to get stay from the court.

Singh, through his counsel, then filed a contempt petition in the court, seeking compliance of the tribunal order as no stay was granted by the High Court, too.

Acting on the contempt plea, the CAT directed the SSP to appear before the tribunal on Monday and directed her to comply with the order by the next date of hearing. — TNS
