The Chandigarh Administration has decided to implement 10 per cent quota for the economically weak among the upper castes in government jobs and educational institutions.

Sources said, “The quota will be implemented from the nextsession starting from April in all the higher education institutes controlled and administrated by the Administration.”

The Chandigarh has become one of the few UTs after states like the Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Jharkhand to implement the 10 per cent quota for the economically weak among the upper castes in government jobs and educational institutions.

The Centre Government had passed a law to provide 10 per cent reservation to the poor among the general category in jobs and educational institutions.

“While the respective states are also required to implement the same after passing the law in Assemblies, Chandigarh being a UT can implement the quota as the law has been approved by the Government,” added the sources in the Administration.

An officer of the Union Territory (UT) Administration said, “We have formally got a letter from the Centre. The same will be implemented in a true letter and spirit as passed by the Central Government without any tweaking.” “The family income and other details will be finalised soon. The Administration will prepare a detailed policy for the same,” he added.

The Central Government has decided to implement the new quota in 40,000 colleges spanning 900 Indian universities from this academic year.

All engineering, polytechnic and other colleges in the city will be covered under the new law. The decision whether to hike number of seats in educational institutions by 10 per cent or not will taken later so that it does not affect other students.
