Chandigarh, September 4

Though the outsiders’ entry has been banned on the Panjab University campus, a slew of well-built men were spotted by the police at the PU today.

In the afternoon, more than 30 middle-aged men were driven out of the Student Centre by the police before they could create any possible ruckus.

SOI-party leader Vicky Middukhera, a student at the Department of French, was reportedly seen shaking hands with them and was later rounded up by SHO Rajeev Kumar.

Middukhera said: “I have no idea who those men were and I cleared my stance with the police too. People know me here and I shake hands with random people too. I have nothing to do with those people.”

The PU Chief Security Officer said he would look into the matter.

Flouting guidelines

Though the Lyngdoh guidelines outline Rs 5,000 as the maximum limit of money that can be spent on student elections by a candidate or a party, two parties, allegedly by the SOI and the NSUI, were organised at a city club today.

Sources said the club was booked by senior party leaders. “While SOI organised a freshers’ party, lunch for about 150 people, NSUI held a party for 400,” the source said. The source also claimed that the total expense of NSUI’s party amounted to somewhere around Rs 2 Lakh, while SOI shelled out about Rs 75,000.

The presidential candidates of both the parties have refused to being involved any such development. NSUI presidential candidate, Nikhil Narmeta, said, “I have no idea about any such party being organised by NSUI. I come from a humble background in Telangana and we had previously decided that we will only fight issue-based politics.”

SOI presidential candidate Chetan Chaudhary added, “I only keep about Rs 100 in my pocket and I haven’t organised any such party.”

Sources also said that SOI had organised a freshers’ party for UICET and that a trip to Thunderzone was also being organised for PU students a day before the elections to buy their votes.
