New Delhi, August 18

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) today sought an explanation from the Jamia Milia Islamia University for its recent circular barring entry of female hostellers after 8 pm-something which the affected students call "sexist" as no such rules are applicable to boys. The Commission has asked the varsity to reply within seven days.

In a letter to Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad, DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal has pointed out that the latest guidelines issued only for girls and not for boys, thereby raising allegations of discrimination.

She stated though the move appears to have been taken for ensuring the safety of girl students "completely disallowing the entry of girl students after 8 pm may end up putting them at greater risks."

Noting that DCW had the authority to investigate and examine matters related to women safety, Maliwal said: "In the light of this, I would appreciate that you provide a copy of the previous guidelines with regard to the hostel timing as well as explain the reasons for imposing such restrictions on girl students within seven days of the receipt of the letter."

The notice in question issued by the varsity administration last week had directed female inmates to be back in their hostels by 8 pm.

BJP MLA summoned on August 20

The Commission today issued summons to BJP legislator OP Sharma in connection with Aam Aadmi Party MLA Alka Lamba's complaint against him over alleged use of foul language.

Sharma has been told to appear before the DCW on August 20 when DCP North Madhur Verma and SHO Kashmere Gate Vijender Singh are also supposed to appear along with the CCTV footage and status report on action taken in the case of attack on AAP legislator Alka Lamba.

St Stephen's PhD scholar meets Maliwal

Accompanied by a delegation of women rights activists, Stephen's research scholar who was allegedly molested by a college professor met DCW Chief Swati Maliwal today.

In the matter, the accused professor Satish Kumar and college Principal Valson Thampu, who has been accused of protecting the guilty, are supposed to appear before the Commission tomorrow, confirmed DCW officials. The victim will also be there.
