Lt Governor Anil Baijal today underscored the need for speedy disposal of cases related to offences against women and children in Delhi through setting up of additional dedicated special fast-track courts/special courts to enforce the provisions of the ordinance.

This will help in clearing the backlog already pending in the court, said Baijal during a meeting with Home Minister Satyendar Jain. It was their first meeting after Jain and his Cabinet colleagues' recent sit-in at Raj Niwas. The meeting was held with other top officials of the departments concerned to review the progress and steps taken in the implementation of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018.

It was stressed that a coordinated approach among investigation, prosecution and trial machineries is needed to enforce the said ordinance in its letter and spirit.

The meeting was also attended by top officials of Home, Law, Women and Child Development departments, Directorate of Prosecution and Forensic Laboratory at Raj Niwas where various issues surrounding the implementation of the amended provisions of the criminal law were discussed.

Baijal directed to get the matter of recruitment of public prosecutors expedited with the Union Public Service Commission and till then advised the authorities to explore the possibility of engaging public prosecutors on contractual basis. An increase in public prosecutors will ensure timely scrutiny of chargesheet and prosecution in the court if required.

The LG emphasised upon optimum use of staff and resources of FSL for speedy disposal of the cases and directed all agencies to take up all necessary steps for effective implementation of the ordinance in a time-bound manner.
