One student killed, 17 injured in school van-tanker collision

NEW DELHI: A seven-year-old girl died and 17 students were injured after a milk tanker rammed into a school van this morning near the Kanhaiya Nagar Metro Station in northwest Delhi, a police official said. The school van was carrying children of two schools of Keshavpuram. Drivers of both the vehicles were detained, the official said.

A seven-year-old girl died and 17 students were injured after a milk tanker rammed into a school van this morning near the Kanhaiya Nagar Metro Station in northwest Delhi, a police official said.

The school van was carrying children of two schools of Keshavpuram. Drivers of both the vehicles were detained, the official said.

The deceased was identified as Garima. The injured children are admitted to different hospitals. Four of the children are admitted to the ICU of the Sushruta Trauma Centre. One of them has suffered stomach injury and is being operated upon while three others have suffered head injuries and shoulder fractures.

Six other students are admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital.

“They are undergoing investigations currently. They have received multiple fractures,” said Dr JC Passey, medical director at Lok Nayak Hospital.

Other injured students were undergoing treatment at Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has ordered a magisterial inquiry of the accident.

The Leader of the Opposition in Vidhan Sabha, Vijender Gupta has expressed his deep condolences over the road accident in Kanhaiya Nagar.

He said the government has been ignoring such incidents occurring in the city as matter of routine and paying no attention for strict compliance of guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court on transportation of schoolchildren.

He urged the Delhi Government to ensure that these guidelines are followed strictly to avoid recurrence of such fatal accidents. He demanded that Delhi Traffic Police should see that vehicles carrying schoolchildren obey these guidelines.

Gupta also demanded that family of the deceased girl and those of the injured children be paid adequate compensation and the injured children be given free and proper treatment. The entire cost of their treatment should be borne by the Delhi Government.
