New Delhi, January 13

The Delhi Traffic Police is in the process of inducting "Road Disaster Management" vehicles equipped with tools to rescue trapped passengers from vehicles following accidents.

According to a senior traffic police officer, two such vehicles are planned for induction by the police and will act as first responders in situations that affect traffic.

These vehicles will be fitted with multiple tools and gadgets for crucial use in disaster situations, he said.

"The vehicle will have cutting tools that can pierce through heavy metal to rescue trapped passengers in vehicles following road accidents, cut and remove uprooted trees from roads and will be equipped to deal with exigency on the road," the official said.

He said the vehicles are currently being designed and will be inducted this year.

The disaster response vehicles are used and deployed in the areas where traffic flow is hampered by natural disasters, said the official.

"The idea behind deploying these vehicles is to clear the roads as much as possible and be the first responders in such a situation before the heavy equipment can take over the major relief operations," he said.

The vehicles will be fitted with state-of-the-art gadgets and equipment, with an independent power source in them.

The vehicles will have a water pump to pump out about 1000 litres of standing water in a minute and disposing it to about 25 to 30 m away from the site, the official said.

The vehicles will have low noise electric chain saw for cutting trees or wooden barriers and a chargeable torch for illuminating the accident site in the night.

The disaster management vehicles will also have lightweight corrosion resistant snake stick to tackle snakes and crawlies till professional help arrives.

"There will be a motor-operated winch to drag and haul out the dead weight to clear the passage or vehicles that have ignition issues with a pulling power of approximately five tonnes," the official said. — PTI
