Solan, July 24

Deputy Commissioner, Sirmaur, BC Badalia has directed officials of the Industries Department to identify 15 bighas for a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for scientific disposal of the industrial waste.

Earlier, the Secretary, Environment, had directed the DC to chalk out the nitty-gritty of establishing CETPs in the industrial areas of Parwanoo and Kala Amb.

The DC said the Irrigation and Public Health Department and the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) should coordinate and expedite the work for preparing a detailed project report of the CETP. This would help in seeking funds from the government to ensure scientific disposal of the industrial waste. He said efforts would be made to integrate a sewage treatment plant being set up at Kala Amb with the CETP.

A special purpose vehicle comprising officials of the SPCB, IPH and the Industries Department would be constituted to monitor the setting up of this project.

The development followed an inter-state meeting of officials held in Chandigarh some months ago where officials from Haryana had pointed out that untreated sewage and industrial waste from Parwanoo and Kala Amb was polluting their water bodies.

The officials had pointed out that untreated sewage waste from Kala Amb found its way into the Markandey which further polluted the Ghaggar.

The Secretary, Environment, who had convened a meeting of officials from the SPCB, has constituted two committees headed by the DCs of Solan and Sirmaur to work out the nitty-gritty of this project.

The committee will work out details like availability of land and other technical aspects in the these two towns. One month has been given to the DCs to submit their reports.

The meeting was attended by officials from the IPH, Industries Department and the SPCB.
